In Solidarity With Parents of Black Children and Allied Organizations

Parents for Diversity is an Ottawa-based group of parents, caregivers, and allies with varied lived experiences working to support parents and caregivers as they advocate for their children in educational spaces using an intersectional, anti-oppression lens.

We recognize the pervasiveness of anti-Black racism in Ontario schools and the adverse effects of anti-Black racism on Black children.

The Peel District School Board (PDSB) Education Director Peter Joshua, along with Vice-Chair of the Board of Trustees David Green, Associate Director of School Support Services Mark Hartmann, and Superintendent of Education Gale Solomon-Henry have filed court documents asking the social media platform Twitter to reveal the identities of individuals who have been critical of the PDSB’s handling of anti-Black racism within the school board with the intent of pursuing legal action against these individuals.

Parents for Diversity supports Parents of Black Children and allied organizations working to end anti-Black racism and other forms of racism and discrimination in the Peel Region and across the province. We support the calls from Parents of Black children and allied organizations for the PDSB to cease this legal action; for Mr. Joshua to resign his position as Education Director; and for the PDSB to hire a director that will enact the necessary changes to end anti-Black racism as identified in reports from the Ministry of Education and independent investigations.

Discrimination and bias experienced by children at the school age level can have lasting impacts on their social and emotional development. Parents for Diversity along with other parents, caregivers, and allies will continue to advocate for Ontario children’s legal right to an education free from discrimination that can allow every child to thrive and reach their full potential.

You actually understand how to bring a problem to light and make it important. More people ought to check this out and understand this side of the story.
